Life originates from two places in Horse Reality: the Wildlife Parks that spawn feral horses, and the Foundation that generates all other breeds. If you trace the pedigree of any Horse Reality horse back to its oldest ancestors, those will either be Foundation or Wildlife Park horses (depending on the breed). The Foundation is owned by the NPC Caroll Clarke and holds different Foundation parents on each continent, although all continents offer the same selection of breeds.
You can find the Foundation in the lower-left corner of the city map or by clicking on the amount of Foundation Tickets you own in the top menu.
When a new breed is introduced to Horse Reality, this will happen by creating Foundation horses or new Wildlife Park parents. The same goes when new genes are added to a breed already in-game. This is because new genes can only be introduced by creating new Foundation horses or Wildlife Park parents.
It is usually the better choice for new players to buy a horse from the market, but there are also many reasons to visit the Foundation and buy foals from there: Adding new blood to your breeding program, starting your breeding line without building on the efforts of another player, getting your hands on a new breed or new genes, or just feeling lucky and going "Foundation digging".
Foundation foals are sold on a first-come, first-serve basis. Once you find one you like, click on the purchase button, and it will immediately appear in your stables at home – unless someone else bought it quicker. Buying a Foundation horse costs 5 000 HRC and 1 FT (Foundation Ticket). Buying Foundation horses from abroad does not currently cost a transportation fee, and they will be transported to your stables at home, no matter where you are located.
Each continent has a set of about 10 mares and 10 stallions per breed, constituting the local Foundation's parents. These horses are not up for sale or studding. They get paired at random to produce Foundation foals for that breed on that continent - players can buy those foals. Travelling can pay off: each continent has a Foundation stock with different bloodlines and genetics. Foundation parents will age like any other horse and are eventually replaced by the game to bring in new genetic material. This is done by the team manually and therefore happens rarely, which is why some Foundation parents enjoy a rather long life.
You can view the profiles of Foundation horses, but since an NPC owns them, you cannot directly see their stats. They will only become visible after purchase. The Breeder’s Advice might give you a rough idea of what to expect. Additionally, many breed-specific clubs have lists of their favourite Foundation parent combinations.
There will always be four Foundation foals of each breed available for purchase. They do not get replaced on their own - only when a horse gets bought will the game create a new foal of the same breed to take its place. New Foundation foals spawn at 6 months old, but they age regularly and stay at the Foundation until adulthood unless bought. That's why you sometimes spot adult horses for sale in the Foundation.
