Finnhorse as a breed is cherished for being versatile. As a result, the breed comes in four main types (a trotter, a riding horse, a draught, and a pony-sized horse) and therefore its conformation has a wide range. However, it's classified as cold-blooded so most horses have strong muscles and bones. These characteristics follow the combined standard for all types: a Finnhorse is first and foremost a strong, versatile horse with a pleasant disposition.[1] The most popular type, a light trotter, has a strong neck, wide chest, long back, slightly sloping croup, and sturdy legs.
The Finnhorse mostly comes in chestnut shades, more than 90% of the population is chestnut. It is very common to see them with flaxen-coloured manes and tails as well as with pangaré. After chestnut, you will see them mostly in bay colours, and sometimes in black. Cream, roan and grey bloodlines are very rare.
All alleles available for the breed can be found below highlighted in green. For better clarity, we bolded alleles that impact coat colours (eg. grey G vs non-grey g).

The Finnhorses came to Horse Reality on January 17th 2020. This breed was requested by one of Horse Reality's Kickstarter Backers: Alda. During the Kickstarter, there was a reward tier where supporters could choose the next breed we would work on. Alda waited almost 2 years to see this breed arrive in the game.[2] Ever since the current Horse Reality version has been online, the Finnhorse received/will receive the following updates:
The Finnhorse is the only official horse breed solely developed in Finland. It carries the name Suomenhevonen, which stands for “Horse of Finland”. It has become a popular breed due to it being very versatile. In addition, it is also a very fast trotter and a popular breed for harness racing.
The Finnhorse comes in several unique types. The best-known type is the trotter. Its popularity is one of the main reasons the breed still exists, almost 75% of all horses are of this type. The second most popular is the riding type and it's growing in popularity. This type is the most universal and must perform in dressage, driving and/or jumping. The heavy draught type is used for pulling heavy loads and agriculture work, but numbers are very low these days with only a few families left. In addition to the above three, there’s even a pony-sized section, this type is the rarest of all though.[1]
Universal in all types is performance and temperament. Horses must both be workable and willing to work. There are several tests, based on the horse’s type, that will grade each individual horse before it is allowed to enter the studbook. These selection criteria have resulted in a very versatile cold-blooded breed with a good temperament and high performance.
