The Lipizzaner is a baroque horse breed with a usually convex or “Roman” head and small ears. They have a deep chest with strong shoulders, broad withers and a muscular, arched neck. The back is equally muscular and wide. The Lipizzaner has strong haunches, moves with high knee action and an aptitude for collection. Their manes and tails are usually long and thick. Lipizzaner Horses tend to mature more slowly than other breeds.[1][2][3]
In the past, many colours were present in the breed. Nowadays, most Lipizzaners are born black, bay or sometimes chestnut and then turn grey, although a few horses retain their colour as adults. Several modifiers and nd1 are present in the breed, in addition to the rare cream allele, but their grey coats usually hide these colour variations. The Lipizzaner breed has few white patterns; only roan, hidden sabino and W20 can rarely be found.[3][4][5]
All alleles available for the breed can be found below highlighted in green. For better clarity, we bolded alleles that impact coat colours
(eg. grey G vs non-grey g).

The Lipizzaner Horse is one of the oldest breeds in Europe. It originated under the Habsburg (Austrian) Empire in the 16th century, when there was a need for horses suited for both military use and riding schools for the nobility. Their name is derived from the Lipizza stud farm, located in modern-day Slovenia. Here, Spanish, Barb, Arabian and Neapolitan horses were crossed to establish the breed. The stud farm worked closely together with the Kladrub Stud, but over time, the Kladrub Stud started focussing more on carriage horses, leading to the Kladruber Horse breed. Around the same time as the Lipizza stud was developed, the Spanish Riding School was getting started in Vienna. To this day, Lipizzaner horses get trained here in classical dressage and high school movements. During World War I, the Piber Stud Farm in Austria became the main home of the Lipizzaners, where they are still being bred today.[2][6][7]
